Sheriff’s Office Detectives are investigating four incidents in which thieves/vandals pried open or attempted to pry open U.S. Postal Service drop boxes at four post offices in Monroe County — Key Largo, Islamorada, Big Pine Key and Summerland Key.
All the incents occurred the night of Jan. 18 into Jan. 19.
Detectives have been assigned to find and arrest the person(s) responsible. There were no arrests as of Friday.
The four U.S. Post Offices targeted were located at:
• 100100 Overseas Highway, Key Largo
• 82801 Overseas Highway, Islamorada
• 29959 Overseas Highway, Big Pine Key
• 24700 Overseas Highway, Summerland Key
The Sheriff’s Office strongly urges those who have used those drop boxes recently to contact their credit companies, banks and anyone else with whom they have conducted business with via traditional mail. The thieves/vandals were likely looking to gather any checks they could forge or personal information they could steal.
It was not immediately clear if the criminals were able to retrieve mail in some of the boxes, whereas other boxes it appeared the thieves/vandals may have been more successful.
Each incident remains under investigation.
