THE PICKPOCKET’S DAUGHTER showing at The Studios of Key West

Written by Neal Ruchman / Directed by Murphy Davis.

Review by Emily Berg

You’ll be hard pressed to find more action, drama and humor packed into one show then you’ll experience with The Pickpocket’s Daughter, playing now through May 28th that The Studios of Key West (533 Eaton Street). This show is fast paced and dramatic with lots of well timed comic relief.

Based on the true story of playwright Neal Ruchman’s mother, and directed skillfully by Murphy Davis The Pickpocket’s Daughter is the suspenseful tale of Harriet “Matzy” Moses, a 17 year old spitfire in 1930’s New York City.

The lower east side has become a battle ground for Irish and Jewish immigrants claiming their turf of the City. Jack Moses, played wonderfully by Jeremey Zoma, is at first glance a street thug who, though Jewish himself, is able to garner the respect of his Irish neighbors. Soon enough it becomes clear that Jack at his core is a loyal family man. He has street smarts in spades but has gotten himself into a situation that can best be handled by the charm of 17 year old Matzy, played by the very funny Cassidy Timms.

Humor plays an essential role in The Pickpocket’s Daughter. The tension mounts in each scene as the situation for the Moses family grows more dire. Well placed jokes keep the show fun and entertaining. And that’s essential as the play tackles themes one might expect from not just depression era New York but all good dramas; xenophobia, power, honor, redemption and family. Secrets are revealed and it seems everyone has something to hide.

The set is sparse which is well considered as it leaves room for the fabulous costumes, backdrop, music and above all else the magnificent acting. Each cast member stands out in their own way which is no easy task with such dynamic main characters and quick moving dialogue.

The play moves fast but the characters and story is not lost in the pacing. As summer rolls in and Key West begins to slow down things continue to move at a New York pace in The Pickpocket’s Daughter.
