The Perfect Fit
By Cathy Baier
It happens sometimes. The dog an adopter initially wants is VERY different from the dog they end up falling in love with and take home. This is what happened to Elicia and her family. They were looking for a companion for their Australian Shepherd Rocko and came to meet a sweet 6.5 lb. Chihuahua mix. But when the little guy refused to come anywhere near Rocko, we all decided it was not the match we had hoped it would be. If it doesn’t work for everyone, it doesn’t work!
Disappointed, but willing to keep looking, Elicia casually mentioned that she was drawn to Daisy after seeing her in her kennel. Daisy could not have been any different; she weighed 53 lbs. and looked nothing like a Chihuahua, but when Elicia met her, she fell in love. When the rest of the family came in and brought Rocko, Daisy’s sweetness towards everyone and her playfulness with Rocko showed all the promise of a bright future. They decided she was the dog for them.
We have stayed in close touch with Elicia since they adopted and every update reveals what a great dog Daisy is and what a great family she has. Initially, going outside was very scary for her and the yard was not somewhere she wanted to be. This presented housetraining challenges but Elicia was patient, didn’t punish Daisy for accidents, and helped her build enough confidence to venture into the unknown world outside. Rocko helped too! It didn’t take long for Daisy to stop having accidents and start enjoying the outdoors. In fact, she’s now learned to open the door and let herself into the yard where she has taken up the hobby of rock-collecting! She’s also learned to swim. She loves playing with her big brother and is never far from Rocko, especially during naptime when she uses him as a pillow. The two recently developed a game Elicia calls The Tugboat Pull. With both dogs holding one end of a toy, Rocko lays down while Daisy pulls him around the house. Elicia reports it’s really hard to focus on work because these two are so entertaining to watch.
Some of the sweetest pictures and updates we have received have been those of Daisy and the youngest member of the family. The beautiful thing about this relationship is how much Daisy enjoys and chooses this connection, which says as much about their daughter as it does about the dog! We are so grateful to Daisy’s family and also to Rocko for giving her such a rich and wonderful life!
