NATIVE GARDENS

by Karen Zacarias

Director: Murphy Davis

Production Dates: March 20 through April 7

A hilarious new comedy of good intentions and bad manners. Gardens and

cultures clash, turning friendly neighbors into feuding enemies. Pablo, a high-powered lawyer, and doctoral candidate Tania, his very pregnant wife, are realizing the American Dream when they purchase a house next door to community stalwarts Virginia and Frank. But a disagreement over a long-standing fence soon spirals into an all-out war of taste, class, privilege, and entitlement. The hilarious results guarantee no one comes out

smelling like a rose.

“…Insensitivity abounds, yet we’re laughing…”

20th CENTURY BLUES

by Susan Miller

Directed by Joy Hawkins

Production Dates: January 22 through February 17

This sharply funny and evocative exploration of time centers on four women who bonded as protesters one night in jail in their youth. Through the vagaries of love, careers, children, and lost causes, the women reunite once a year for a photo shoot, chronicling their changing selves. But when these private photos have the potential to become part of a public exhibit, mutiny erupts and relationships are tested.

Cast Breakdown:

(the four main characters are all women in their 60s)

DANNY

60s. Attractive, great sense of humor with an artist’s energy. Layered with urban angst and a dose of self-doubt. Divorced. Has a grown son, Simon. She’s an accomplished, well-known photographer at a crucial point in her life.

SIL

60s. A real estate agent. Separated from her husband. She works her ass off to keep current. And to keep afloat. Worries about aging.

MAC

60s. A high-level journalist. African American. She is witty, smart, opinionated, and being phased out of her job. Lives with her female partner.

GABBY

60s. A dedicated veterinarian running her own practice. She lives in Boston with her one and only husband. A true friend. She doesn’t do well with conflict and wants everyone to be “okay”. Free-spirited and quirky.

BESS

Very senior. Danny’s mother. In no way is she a generic “old woman”. She is modern and very loving, with former talents of her own, though she is now in the early stages of dementia.

SIMON

Late 20s, early to mid-30s. Danny’s son. He works for a progressive cable/internet news program. He is close with his mother and grandmother.
