TERRY’S PICKY PALATE / Beef Wellington and a Pinot Noir at Martin’s on Duval Street

Now THIS was a meal to remember!
I’ve always been a fan of Martin’s, 917 Duval St. So when I was assigned to write about the sumptuous cuisine at this outstanding restaurant I jumped at the chance. This is one of Key West’s most celebrated places to eat, and I knew that whatever I was served would make for an exceptional dining experience.
I was not disappointed.
On this particular evening, my server Dougles Wolak talked me into sampling a daily special entree that I’ll never forget – a Beef Wellington, featuring a filet mignon, topped with duck fois gras, sauteed mushrooms, onions and Serrano ham (Basque prosciutto,) encased in a puff pastry, and served atop a green peppercorn sauce with carrots, cauliflower, asparagus, a potato puff, and a Provencal-style roasted half-tomato topped with bread crumbs and fresh Parmesan cheese.
Oh, and as an add-on, an eight-ounce Caribbean lobster tail, seasoned with tarragon and parsley butter.
Personally, I think this is the best beef steak entree on the island,” Wolak said. “The puff pastry helps keep the heat in, and circulates the flavors throughout the filet.”
He was so right. I’ve had this dish before, but Martin’s version, adorned with the rich fois gras and delicate Serrano ham, was a gastronomic revelation that I ate slowly, savoring each bite.
The lobster tail was succulent and delicious, and served a little differently than in most Key West establishments.
The libation Wolak suggested to accompany my plate was a Meiomi Pinot Noir, from California.
It’s a versatile wine,” he said. “And a good choice for people who want something a little less full-bodied. It’s perfect for a really flavorful entree like our Beef Wellington, but it actually works well with seafood as well.”
This was an outstanding meal, and it made me want to sample the rest of Martin’s mouth-watering menu.
Here’s hoping I get the chance to!
