Temporary Bridge on Staples Avenue
Work has begun on a temporary bike and pedestrian bridge on Staples Avenue over the Salt Run Creek. There may be closures while the temporary bridge is put in place. Cyclists are urged to follow the marked detour until the temporary bridge is in place.
Motorists are urged to take extra care on Flagler Avenue as there may be more bicycle traffic while the work is being done.
The Staples Pedestrian Bridge, crossed by people over 7,000 times each week, has reached the end of its useful life. The current bridge, serving commuters, visitors, and residents along the Crosstown Greenway, is showing signs of decay.
The replacement bridge currently being designed will be constructed of aluminum. It will stand at approximately the same height and will be installed with consideration for the Americans with Disabilities Act. Additional improvements include a design to make it easier for inexperienced cyclists to cross.
The Staples Pedestrian Bridge was evaluated in 2022 and was considered sound for non-motorized vehicle traffic. Due to the poor condition of the corroded steel elements, the bridge has been recommended for replacement. Some elements of the existing bridge have shown to be challenging to novice bicyclists. The new design should address users’ concerns while restricting cut-through motorized traffic.
The replacement will require reconstructing the concrete abutments that support the bridge. The construction is planned to proceed as quickly as possible to minimize the disruption to residents and commuters.
