Tavernier man charged with threats with a gun
A 19 year old from Tavernier was arrested today, charged with pointing a gun at another man.
The victim called the Sheriff’s Office at 8:15 a.m. to report he was driving in his car in Key Largo when a man in another car pointed a gun at him. He said he’d just dropped his child off at Key Largo School when the incident took place.
Deputy Gil Gonzalez was on patrol in Key Largo when he heard a notice to be on the lookout for a black Dodge Charger southbound from the school. He began to look for the vehicle. A short time later, Sgt. Syd Whitehouse spotted the car at the 101 mile marker. The sergeant pulled the vehicle over and Deputy Gonzalez responded to back him up.
There were three people in the car. 19 year old Douglas Keashawn Mills was in the back seat and matched the description of the person who pointed the gun. Near where he was sitting in the car, the officers found a black and tan backpack. Inside was a black semi-automatic pistol. It was not loaded, but a live round was on the back seat. The two other people in the car with Mills said the bag belonged to him, but they didn’t know he had a gun.
Mills was arrested. He was charged with aggravated assault, improper exhibition of a firearm and displaying a weapon while committing a felony. He was booked into jail.
