Suspect taken into custody after chase in Key Largo
A 34-year-old Homestead man with a warrant for his arrest fled from Sheriff’s Office deputies Thursday night in Key Largo before he was ultimately arrested.
Christopher Charles Eugene Orr was charged with fleeing and eluding, resisting arrest, possession of cocaine and possession of marijuana. The warrant was for obstruction of justice/tampering with evidence in a separate case.
The incident began about 9:20 p.m. when Upper Keys Deputy Joel Torres received information that Orr, who is known to law enforcement, was possibly driving a gold Mercedes southbound on U.S. 1. Deputy Torres spotted the vehicle near the Tarpon Basin Drive intersection and stopped the car on U.S.1 near Calusa Street. Deputy Torres knew that Orr has been known to carry firearms in the past, so Deputy Torres performed a felony traffic stop, meaning he drew his service weapon and held the driver — later confirmed to be Orr — at gunpoint while ordering him to put his hands out of the open car window. Orr refused to comply and instead exited the vehicle. Orr began reaching into his pockets while Deputy Torres continued to order him to raise his hands above his head. Orr refused to comply and continued to reach into his pockets. Orr produced a card, which he stated was his driver’s license. Orr then got back into his vehicle.
Orr then fled westbound on Calusa Street in the Mercedes, before turning left on Kay Drive. Orr crossed U.S. 1 with stopping for multiple on-coming cars and then turned on Hibiscus Lane. Orr then stopped, exited the Mercedes and dropped a small bag before running away through a construction site, over a fence and into a wooded area. Deputies Jason Farr, Christopher Kilmurray and Kyle Page also responded. Orr was caught shortly thereafter. Orr flung his arms to avoid being handcuffed by Deputy Farr and Deputy Torres. Orr refused to comply with orders to get inside a patrol vehicle. Orr had to be forcefully placed in the patrol car.
Deputy Kilmurray transported Orr to Mariners Hospital, where he was medically cleared. Orr was then taken to jail.
The bag Orr dropped was found. It contained 11.5 grams of cocaine, much of it in crack form, and 4.5 grams of marijuana.
