Stranded Free Diver Reunited with Lifeline Buoy
A Key West man nearly lost at sea has been reunited with one of the buoys that helped save his life. After being stranded on January 26, strong currents pushed Dylan Gartenmayer into an ecological reserve managed by Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. He used a knife to cut loose mooring buoys that kept him afloat until his family found him in near darkness. The castaway buoys were later found and, today, the sanctuary’s buoy team presented Gartenmayer with a keepsake of his heroic experience. Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary manages a network of more than 900 buoys across the more than 140 miles of the Keys.
