Stay Safe on New Year’s Eve

The Key West Police Department is readying to ring in 2020 by ensuring the safety of the downtown “Party Zone” as well as the rest of the community.

On New Year’s Eve, Duval Street will be closed to vehicles, as will the following cross streets: Petronia, Caroline and Greene. The area will remain closed through midnight and only reopened as the pedestrian traffic allows.

As in prior years, all of Duval Street is considered a Party Zone. CNN will have news crews on hand at the Bourbon Street Pub complex to cover the annual lowering of Sushi, one of the city’s most renowned drag queens.

Key West is a popular and crowded destination this time of year, and the Key West Police Department wants to remind everyone of a few simple tips to keep the revelry safe:

  • Don’t drink and drive. There are frequent shuttles to downtown through the Safe Ride.
  • Don’t even consider firing a firearm as part of the celebration. Falling bullets can kill, and it’s illegal to fire a gun in public;
  • Leave the fireworks to the experts;
  • And finally, all the people of the Key West Police Department and the City of Key West wish everyone a safe and happy New Year.
