State Attorney’s Office Holds Charter Boat Captain Accountable
In a significant development for environmental and wildlife conservation in the Keys, Anthony Solmo, a local fishing charter boat captain, has pled no contest to three charges involving the illegal possession of marine life. The charges detail the possession of undersized dog snapper, undersized grey snapper, and an over-the-limit quantity of snapper. In a move that underscores the importance of adherence to environmental laws, the court has decided to withhold adjudication on the condition that Mr. Solmo complies with the court’s stipulated penalties.
These penalties include a 30-day county jail sentence, which will be suspended provided Mr. Solmo successfully completes a 6-month probation period. He is also required to pay court costs of $388.00, complete 50 hours of community service, finish an FWC Online Course focused on fishing regulations and environmental stewardship, pay a $100.00 fine, and cover the costs associated with his probation. Should Mr. Solmo fail to meet these conditions, he will be mandated to serve the suspended jail term.
State Attorney Dennis Ward issued a statement emphasizing the importance of protecting our environment and natural resources. “This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences awaiting those who choose to disregard our laws designed to preserve marine life and habitats. Our commitment to environmental protection is unwavering, and we will continue to prosecute those who harm our natural heritage to the fullest extent of the law. It’s imperative that we all take responsibility for safeguarding the unique ecosystems that define the Keys, ensuring they remain vibrant and healthy for generations to come.”
This case highlights the ongoing efforts of local and state authorities to enforce regulations that protect Florida’s diverse marine environments. It serves as a cautionary ‘take notice’ for individuals and businesses in the fishing industry, reminding them of the legal and moral obligations we all share in preserving our planet’s natural resources.
