Florida Keys Community College Goonies (Masters Level 4) and Key Largo School Tornadoes (Junior Level 4) Unified Flag Football teams will compete at the Special Olympics Florida 2017 Fall Classic for their 2cnd year. This year they will advance to state level competition without a preliminary Area competition due to Hurricane Irma’s effect on the ability to travel to Miami. Each team has been practicing hard to make up for lost time due to Hurricane Irma.
The Goonies head coach, Randy Acevedo had his team out on the field in Key West on Sept. 27, yet many FKCC team members could not attend due to the college’s extended closure. The full team resumed practices during the second week of Oct. The Tornadoes head coach, Jordan Lombard was able to resume practice when school went back in session on Sept. 25, yet due to the storm a few of his team members did not return. After recruiting new players, the full Tornadoes team was formed mid-October. Both teams are ready to show the state of Florida that they are #keysstrong
Unified Teams are made up of Special Olympics athletes and typical players from their respective schools or the community. Unified Championship Schools have three components- Unified Sports teams, Unified Clubs and Unified Schoolwide activities.
Florida Keys Community College sponsors the Goonies Unified Flag Football Team with plans for developing Athletics and Soccer teams, supports the SO College Club and holds a campus wide Pledge for Respect Day.
Key Largo School sponsors the Tornadoes Unified Flag Football and Soccer Teams, as a Partners Club and holds a school wide Pledge for Respect Day.
