South Florida Red Cross Sends Volunteers to Assist With Disaster Relief Efforts in Three States
MIAMI, Fla. (August 27, 2021) – The American Red Cross is preparing to shelter and support families from Alabama to Mississippi as Hurricane Ida takes aim at the Gulf Coast. People in the path of this storm should listen to the advice of local authorities and evacuate immediately if asked to do so.
After the strength of Ida increased rapidly, the South Florida Red Cross quickly mobilized to send support to Alabama and Mississippi, which are in the path of the storm. In addition to Alabama and Mississippi, currently, more than 17 Red Cross volunteers have deployed to areas of disaster across the nation including Tennessee, to assist with devastating floods.
“Hurricane Ida may not impact the South Florida Region but our Red Cross volunteers stand ready to support our Red Cross colleagues in the path of the storm,” said Siara Campbell, Regional Communications Director for the Red Cross South Florida Region. “We are One Red Cross and we come together when disaster strikes.”
Today, Ida strengthened to a hurricane while approaching the Gulf Coast. Starting Sunday, Ida is likely to produce heavy rainfall across the central Gulf Coast from southeast Louisiana to coastal Mississippi and Alabama, which may result in considerable flash flooding, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The South Florida Red Cross continues to call on volunteers to lend their support on the ground or virtually as Mississippi, Alabama, and surrounding areas wait to see the impact the storm may cause.
