SOUTH FLORIDA RED CROSS SENDS STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS TO ASSIST WITH HURRICANE MICHAEL RELIEF EFFORTS
The American Red Cross is preparing for a large relief effort as Hurricane Michael approaches the Florida panhandle, even while continuing efforts in the Carolinas for families still trying to recover from Hurricane Florence. The South Florida Region of the American Red Cross has quickly mobilized to send support. To date, more than 20 South Florida Red Cross staff members and volunteers have deployed to Tallahassee and Alabama to assist in Red Cross relief efforts.
“Even though Hurricane Michael won’t directly affect our region, we are ready to send support to our neighbors in North Florida,” said Joanne Nowlin, Regional CEO of the South Florida Region. “We are One Red Cross and we come together when disaster strikes.”
Michael is predicted to be life-threatening, and is expected to hit parts of Florida Wednesday with strong winds, devastating flooding and storm surge as high as 12 feet in some places. The storm is still strengthening with winds already close to 110 mph. Thousands of people have been ordered to evacuate, and governors in Florida and Alabama have already declared states of emergency.
