Sheriff’s Office donates AED machines to Key West Police

Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay donated 14 Cardiac Science G5 Automated External Defibrillator (AEDs) to the Key West Police Department on Thursday.

An Automated External Defibrillator is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses life-threatening heart issues. The machine applies a shock of electricity to the heart if necessary in order to save the patient. They machines donated Thursday employ voice commands to the user and are designed to be effective life-saving tools for police, paramedics and laypersons alike.

The Sheriff’s Office uses the same machines and Sheriff Ramsay told Chief Brandenburg that Deputies have successfully used the machines multiple times in the Florida Keys.

“Saving lives is the most important part of any law enforcement officer’s job,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay. “We have a strong partnership with the Key West Police Department and that partnership is all about providing a higher level of service to our residents. The Sheriff’s Office will always stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the Key West Police Department. I know they will put these life-saving machines to good use.”

The 14 machines were purchased at a cost of $1,250 each using non-taxpayer funds. They were donated new, still in the box, to the Key West Police Department.

Sheriff Ramsay often uses non-taxpayer funds to support Sheriff’s Office partners.
