Sheriff’s Office Animal Farm to get butterfly garden

The Sheriff’s Office and Farmer Jeanne Selander would like to thank The Trophia Butterfly Foundation for donating trees and plantings for a butterfly garden at the Animal Farm at the Monroe County Detention Center on Stock Island. The nonprofit foundation is dedicated to the restoration and preservation of butterfly populations through habitat rehabilitation, public education and community support. The plants were delivered and laid out Thursday by John Mumford of Details Landscaping Design Inc. We received five mature trees — a gumbo limbo, a pigeon plum, two buttonwood and a mahogany. We also received butterfly attracting plants such as a blue porter, plumbago and lantana. The butterfly garden will be installed, as shown in the photo, at the entrance to the farm. The entrance will be greatly improved thanks to The Trophia Butterfly Foundation and Details Landscaping Design Inc.!

The buttery garden should be installed prior to our next open house at the Animal Farm scheduled for 1-3 p.m. Sunday, April 22.
