Shelters for Monroe County Residents Open Today at FIU and Miami-Dade County Fairgrounds and Exposition; Buses To Shelters also Begin Today

MONROE COUNTY, FL – Shelters officially open for the general population of Monroe County at 4 p.m.Thursday, Sept. 7, at Florida International University. Monroe County’s pet-friendly, general population shelter opens at 5 p.m. E. Darwin Fuchs Pavilion at the Miami-Dade County Fairgrounds and Exposition and open at 5 p.m. Pet owners should bring the pet’s food, medications and vaccination records.

Key West Transit will begin hurricane evacuation service at noon Thursday. Buses will be clearly marked “hurricane evacuation” on the destination boards and drop people off at both shelters. And, Key West buses will take animals on the bus if they’re controlled or caged.

They will circulate throughout the city, picking up riders at regular bus stops. Riders will be transferred at the Transit Center on Stock Island, and the buses will proceed to the hurricane shelter at Florida International University, picking up riders along US 1.

Evacuees are asked to go to the nearest bus stop, or the Transit Center on College Road. Pickups will continue throughout the afternoon Thursday and resume at 6 a.m. on Friday. Weapons and alcohol are prohibited on the buses.

Regular bus service – Citywide, the Duval Loop and the Lower Keys Shuttle – will end at midnightWednesday, September 6th.
