Sentencing of Angel Font by Judge Mark Wilson Following Negotiated Plea
In a significant legal development, Angel Font 23, has been sentenced by Judge Mark Wilson after a negotiated plea agreement, concluding a case that gripped the Key West community due to its tragic circumstances. The case centered on the fatal shooting of Jossue Emmanuel Gomez on June 22, 2021, which occurred during an attempted robbery.
Angel Font was charged with and pleaded guilty and admitted guilt to the following:
Count 1: Second Degree Murder – Adjudicated guilty, sentenced to thirty years in Florida State Prison, with a mandatory minimum of twenty-five years.
Count 2: Attempted Robbery with a Firearm – Adjudicated guilty, sentenced to fifteen years, served concurrently with Count 1.
Count 3: Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon – Adjudicated guilty, sentenced to fifteen years, served concurrently with Counts 1 and 2.
Count 4: Unlawful Use of a Two-Way Communication Device – Adjudicated guilty, sentenced to five years, served concurrently with all prior counts.
The incident that led to these charges occurred in the early hours when police responded to a scene where Mr. Gomez was discovered with a fatal gunshot wound. The Investigation revealed that Font and his accomplices had planned to rob Gomez of marijuana, using a firearm unlawfully possessed by Font. The plan escalated to violence, culminating in Gomez’s death.
State Attorney Dennis Ward shared his perspective on the motives behind the crime, “This tragedy began over a simple yet fatal decision: a group of young men ran out of marijuana, had no money to purchase more, and resorted to violence over a mere four ounces of it. They reached out to an acquaintance, a decision that spiraled into an altercation resulting in the senseless loss of Jossue Emmanuel Gomez’s life. This case illustrates the devastating impact of small-scale drug-related disputes escalating into irreversible violence, leaving multiple families forever changed.”
Lead Prosecutor Charlie Britt added, “The death of Mr. Gomez is a stark reminder of how quickly situations can escalate to tragic outcomes. This was a senseless act of violence that has not only taken a young man’s life but has also impacted the lives of everyone involved, from the families of the victim and the defendants to the community at large. I would like to express my gratitude to the Key West Police Department, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and all the other agencies that collaborated on this case. Their diligent work and cooperation were crucial in bringing about a resolution to this complex case.”
The plea deal was reached after extensive negotiations, taking into account the severity of the crime and Font’s voluntary admission of guilt. This resolution facilitated a faster judicial process and delivered a measure of justice to the victim’s family without the need for a prolonged trial.
Judge Wilson’s sentencing not only reflects the gravity of Font’s actions but also emphasizes the consequences of criminal activities involving firearms, especially by individuals with prior felony convictions.
The case highlights the diligent work of the Key West Police Department and the legal system in addressing and resolving complex criminal cases through both investigative work and the judicial negotiation process.
