SCHOOL BOARD OFFICIALS MEET TO WORKSHOP DRUG TESTING POLICY
WHO: School Board Members, Executive Leadership Team, the Public, GEMs
WHAT: Board members plan to meet for a workshop, closed executive sessions, and a regular meeting. District officials will workshop the student drug and alcohol testing policy. Officials had to reevaluate the implementation of the policy in the middle of the school year, due to the amount of days students missed during Hurricane Irma. Once the policy is reread at the next meeting and formally voted on, the policy would go into effect at the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year. District officials would use a random system to choose schools and students for testing throughout the year. The testing would be limited to student athletes and students participating in ancillary activities related to those athletics. The policy also implements consequences for students testing positive for any illegal substances.
Superintendent Mark Porter said this policy will be implemented on a trial basis. “The purpose of this policy is not to punish, but to offer principals access to helping students who may be partaking in harmful behaviors, like drinking alcohol or using drugs illegally. These students are under enough stress as athletes, and so we want to provide the best options for them to succeed and find healthy ways to release and be productive. Hopefully, a trial run of this policy will show us whether this is a solution for what has been recognized as a problem.”
District officials will also discuss storm-related lessons learned. Board members will conduct closed collective bargaining session and closed session on safety and security.
