School Board Members, Superintendents, and District Officials Gather For FSBA Advocacy Event
MONROE COUNTY – Andy Griffiths of the Monroe County School Board joined over 130 school board members, district superintendents, and other education leaders in Tallahassee March 29-31, 2017, to participate in the Florida School Boards Association’s 30th Annual Day in the Legislature Conference and Board of Directors’ Meeting.
The conference began Wednesday afternoon with a briefing session that provided up-to-the-minute information and status of the major education related bills and funding proposals that are currently under consideration by the Legislature. Thursday morning began with a networking breakfast at which representatives from Governor Scott’s office and legislative leaders were invited to offer their perspective on key issues. This was followed by the opportunity for participants to visit the Capitol, to meet with their respective legislative delegations, and to attend legislative committee meetings.
“This conference provided an excellent opportunity to engage in the legislative process and to meet with our legislators to discuss the education issues that are of interest and concern to the students, parents, and educators in our school district,” said Andy Griffiths, board member for District 2. “I was particularly pleased to have met with Senators Bill Montford, David Simmons, Jack Latvala, and Frank Artiles, and State Representatives Holly Raschein and Jose Javier Rodriguez, to discuss reduced testing and considering change to the proficiency scores.” Mr. Griffiths also visited with State School Board Member, Andy Tuck.
Griffiths said he was grateful for the opportunity to also thank the legislators for support on Federal Connect Supplement funds, where Monroe County will receive more than $900,000 of the total $12million allocation.
“We are proud to celebrate the 30th anniversary of this advocacy event. Since 1930, FSBA has prided itself in being ‘the Voice of Education in Florida,’ and this was well illustrated by the thoughtful and coherent advocacy of school board members during this conference,” said FSBA Executive Director Andrea Messina.
