School Board Hosts Commission Walk-through

The Monroe County School Board is hosting a joint meeting with City officials and the Key West Housing Authority to talk about its long-term vision for the Trumbo Point property. The informal meeting – followed by a walk-through of the facility – is slated for June 8th at 1 p.m. at the District’s administrative building.

The aim of this gathering is to familiarize the group with the visions of each entity as to the future land use of these adjacent properties: Trumbo Road properties owned by the District and the Housing Authority’s Porter Place. School Superintendent Theresa Axford points out that this is a starting place for a dialog between the City, Housing Authority, and the School District to discern the best direction for these redevelopment projects and whether a joint vision could be realized.  The organizations are planning for extensive community engagement on the project.

Key West Planning Director Katie Halloran will provide an overview of zoning in the area and businessman Ed Swift will give a brief overview of the history of past discussions regarding the potential of the property.

Originally part of the Trumbo Point Navy Base, the School District currently uses the area for its administrative arm. The property is surrounded by Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and Housing Authority properties.

Superintendent Theresa Axford stated, “I am excited to have this opportunity to collaborate with the City and the Housing Authority.”

“This is an information visioning session,” said Key West Mayor Teri Johnston. “This is not even about planning, it’s about starting a dialog and an understanding of how we can all work together for the betterment of the community.”
