Schaka and Rambo
In 2015, two adorable oversized Labrador Retriever brothers, Schaka and Rambo, were surrendered to our Marathon Campus together. The two Labradors were a joy to have around! Typical Labs, the brothers were goofy, friendly and loved to play together. We placed the two boys together into foster care and hoped to find a family that would take them both.
As it turned out, there was plenty of interest in the boys as individuals, but due to their size and age, there was not a single family that was ready to take the pair. We got lucky when we found two amazing families living in Key West as active duty Coast Guard members. The two families knew each other and submitted excellent applications. They promised to let the two boys continue to have play dates and visit with each other often. They kept their word and the brothers, although living apart, were reunited weekly at the dog park to run and romp and play together.
As the years passed, the two Labs seemed less interested in meeting up for play dates. As they matured, they became more comfortable in their new routines and lives as individual members of their new families. Although sad at first, it became a blessing in disguise when Schaka’s family received orders to move to Hawaii. After one final play date and goodbye, Schaka was on to his new life on a new island.
Recently, Schaka’s mom shared some exciting news. Schaka is going to be a big brother, but this time, to a human sibling! We are always so grateful to our adoptive families that keep in touch with us through the years. We love to hear their stories and share with you their journey in life outside the shelter.
