Rescue Tail / Piper moves to Wisconsin
By Tara McFarland
Some things are just meant to be. In early April, Cory and his wife Danielle were enjoying their vacation here in the Florida Keys. Unbeknownst to us, they had been discussing stopping by the local shelter, our Marathon Campus. Having recently lost their beloved companion, they were missing the bark of a dog, the wag of a tail, the slobbery kisses of a four-legged friend. Although they tried to resist, the day before they were set to return home Cory and Danielle walked through our door.
There she was. With the same name and the same breed of their late dog, they just had to meet Daphne. With her permanent pout and exaggerated features, just seeing her made everyone smile. She turned on the charm, playing, kissing and cuddling with her new friends as if she was saying, “Pick me! Pick me!” We watched as their faces lit up with excitement, their smiles bigger, laughing louder, and eyes soft with a touch of sadness. They loved Daphne, and they missed their own Daphne, but they needed her, and she needed them.
The connection was undeniable and we moved quickly through the application process. The very next day Daphne reunited with her new family and together they made the long trip home to Wisconsin.
Daphne is now Piper, and she is appreciating the cooler Wisconsin weather, even seeing her first snowfall! She spends her days exploring, lounging in the sun and kayaking on the lake. Each wonderful update we receive from her adoring family is filled with pictures of what every animal deserves, a life where they are truly loved. From having been left in our overnight pen in Marathon, to being the center of her new family in Wisconsin, this rescue tail has the happiest of endings.
Adopting an animal is a special gift, not only for the animal you’re adopting, but a gift to yourself and family. The love of a shelter animal is undeniable. Through the years working with thousands of different animals from thousands of different backgrounds, the truth is every shelter pet is grateful for the people that choose them. If you have room in your home and heart for a shelter pet please visit us online at fkspca.org and view animals available at both our Key West and Marathon Campuses. If you find a pet you’re interested in, please complete an online application and one of our adoption counselors will provide a telephone consultation so you can learn more about our adoptable animals at the shelter.
