Rescue Tail / Mila
By Tara McFarland
“Do you have any kittens available for adoption?” Lauren asked, almost reluctantly. The tone of her voice inferred that she expected to be let down. “We do have kittens coming up for adoption, they’re just waiting on spay/neuter” replied the front desk staff. “Would any of them happen to be Calico?” Lauren’s tone of voice now showed a hint of excitement. “Actually yes, one is a dilute Calico, her name is Pixie Mittens.” Lauren, now more enthusiastic, asked “How do I put in an application?”
Lauren had recently lost her beloved Calico a few months prior and felt her dog Kali was lonely. Here on vacation, a simple feeling inside her heart told her she should check with the local shelter, our Marathon Campus. She made the call that day with hesitancy, not expecting that a little Calico kitten would be available for adoption during their short stay in the Florida Keys. However, it truly was fate. That week the little kittens were set to be spayed and neutered and would be ready for their furever families.
It was love at first sight. A truly perfect match. Lauren and her husband’s eyes lit up with excitement when they came to meet their new kitten. She gently held her close as she purred underneath her chin until the little kitten fell asleep. With their eyes welled up with tears, the bond was solidified and the little dilute Calico kitten from the Keys was on her way to her new life with her new family. Now named Mila, her family shared with us this wonderful update.
“From the minute she arrived home, Mila has been eager to explore and super cuddly. Her kitten energy is contagious and she really lights up our house. We’re constantly laughing at her antics as she pounces and leaps about the house. You weren’t kidding when you said Mila and her siblings love those little toy mice – she’s constantly carrying one around, chasing them, or playing what we call “mouse soccer” using the dog’s bed as a stadium. Mila loves food and meows happily (and loudly!) to let us know when she’s hungry. She’s also super smart and
already knows some basic commands.
Best of all, she and our dog, Kali, are getting along so well. It’s like they’ve known each other forever. We didn’t have any issues introducing them and they started cuddling after only a few days. Mila loves to be near Kali and even tries to groom Kali’s tail and ears on occasion. We can’t thank you enough for all you do. Mila is the perfect addition to our family!”
