Rescue Tail / Christmas in July at the Florida Keys SPCA
By Tara McFarland
Here at the Florida Keys SPCA, we’re seeing the same trend as shelters nationwide. Incoming animal numbers are up, and adoptions are down. Amidst challenging times, insecurities, housing crisis, and a barrage of compounding circumstances, animals are ending up in shelters in droves. Estimates of current shelter data show that nearly 60,000 more dogs and 40,000 more cats are available for adoption from shelters now than this time last year.
From June 1st – July 22nd 2022 our two campuses took in 230 animals as strays, owner surrenders, services and as part of Animal Control Investigations on top of our current shelter animal population. In that same time period, only 85 animals were adopted.
The Florida Keys are known for celebrating, well, just about anything. In July, a notoriously hot and slow time of year, we still find a way to keep the party going with Christmas in July celebrations and events all month long. With our goal of finding every adoptable animal at our Key West and Marathon Campuses a home, and so many wonderful animals in need of families, we too will be celebrating Christmas in July on Saturday, July 30th.
All adoption fees will be waived at both campuses, and we will have staff & volunteers on hand to do our counselings and same day adoptions. With 208 dogs, cats, small animals and reptiles currently available for adoption, if you have been thinking of adopting a new family member, this will be the day! We will be open extended hours: in Marathon from 10am-4pm and in Key West 10am-6pm. Who knows? Your adoption that day may just be be our next Rescue Tail!
