Red Cross Marks Two Years Since Hurricane Ian
Two years ago, on September 28, 2022, Hurricane Ian made landfall near Fort Myers, Florida, becoming the third-costliest weather disaster in U.S. history. The Category 4 storm devastated communities across Florida’s southwest coast, displacing thousands and leaving behind widespread destruction.
Thanks to our compassionate volunteers and generous donors, the American Red Cross was able to respond swiftly, helping impacted communities begin their recovery:
- Over 1.7 million meals and snacks served in partnership with community organizations
- More than 60,200 overnight shelter stays provided with partners
- Roughly 36,500 households received essential relief supplies, including cleanup kits
- Over 3,500 disaster workers deployed to support recovery efforts
- An estimated 195,000 people received disaster relief and recovery assistance
In the two years since Hurricane Ian, the Red Cross has remained on the ground, working closely with local organizations to support long-term recovery. Through grants and partnerships, we’ve helped strengthen communities still struggling with food, housing and health insecurities, fostering resilience against future disasters.
As the climate crisis drives more frequent and intense storms, Hurricane Ian remains a powerful reminder of the critical need for ongoing preparedness and community resilience. The Red Cross continues to adapt and strengthen its response efforts to meet the growing challenges posed by these unpredictable and destructive weather events.
