Public Health Safety During and After Hurricane Ian
(Monroe County, Fla) – The Florida Department of Health provides the following public health safety message regarding Hurricane Ian.
- Storm surge warning is in effect in the Lower Keys from Key West through Big Pine Key. Avoid driving in flooded water. Six inches of water is enough to float a car, causing it to stall, lose control, or even get swept away.
- Do not play in flood water. This water can be potentially contaminated with sewage water due to uncovered manholes.
- Gas-powered generators must never be used indoors, in a garage, or within 20 feet of windows or a window air conditioner.
- Have a battery- powered Carbon Monoxide alarm installed to prevent CO Poisoning.
- Prevent electrocution and always assume that all overhead wires are energized, or “live” and at a lethal dosage. Never touch a fallen overhead powerline. Always report a fallen electrical line to your local utility provider.
- When preparing food, wash hands thoroughly with soap and water. Keep foods hot at 135oF or above and keep cold food below 41oF. When in doubt, throw it out.
- Cover your skin; Wear a long-sleeved shirt, lightweight pants, and use insect repellant containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
- Drain standing water to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.
