PROJECT STARTS TUESDAY TO REPAIR THREE COUNTY PARKS ON BIG PINE KEY WITH HURRICANE IRMA DAMAGE

BIG PINE KEY, FL – A Monroe County project will start Tuesday to repair three parks damaged by Hurricane Irma on Big Pine Key. The $579,000 project will replace fencing at Watson Field Park, Big Pine Community Park and Blue Heron Park.

The work will begin with Watson Field Park (30150 South Street), followed by Big Pine Community Park (31009 Atlantis Drive) and Blue Heron Park (30451 Lytton’s Way). Construction is expected to be completed in April 2019. The project is eligible for FEMA reimbursement from hurricane disaster funding.

Each park will close periodically during its repairs. Work includes replacing boundary fencing as well as fencing for the skate park, basketball courts and baseball fields. Please be patient during the closures and stay out of construction zones for your safety.

“It is our intention to get these parks back up and running as soon as possible to get athletic and recreational activities safely resuming for the community,” Monroe County Project Manager Keith Bring said. “Other repairs are continuing with all Monroe County parks as needed.”

In addition to the fencing project, utilities are being assessed at all three Big Pine Key parks and at Veteran’s Park at the west end of the Seven Mile Bridge.

Monroe County also is working on a project to repair the lighting at Harry Harris Park in Tavernier and the Big Pine Key parks.

The County is working methodically to ensure all requirements are met for FEMA reimbursement.
