Party Like a Hemingway with Key West Art & Historical Society Distinguished Speaker Philip Greene and John Hemingway
Did Hemingway like vermouth? How about sugar in his daiquiri? Which drink became his comfort when the sharks came and ate his catch? Connoisseurs of the cocktail will be intoxicated by “The Hemingway Experience,” a special Key West Art & Historical Society party and presentation set for Friday, January 27 from 5:30pm – 8:30pm at the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum courtyard, featuring special guests John Hemingway, grandson of Ernest Hemingway, and Phil Greene, mixologist and cocktail historian.
“Hemingway was a no-nonsense drinker, says Greene, author of the critically-acclaimed and best-selling “To Have and Have Another: A Hemingway Cocktail Companion.” “He wanted a drink to be well made, very cold, and not at all sweet. He traveled globally and drank locally.”
Guests of “The Hemingway Experience” will be greeted with an authentic Ernest Hemingway cocktail followed by a lively, informative, and entertaining presentation on the “life, times, and favorite drinks, of the original “Most Interesting Man in the World,”” says Greene. They will receive cocktail samples of Hemingway’s most favorite drinks, the folklore behind them, a recipe demo, and an opportunity for Q&A with Greene, who is also an attorney, writer, and co-founder of the Museum of the American Cocktail. After, guests can enjoy conversation, music, light edibles, and if thirsty for more, authentic Hemingway cocktails from the bar, all included with ticket purchase. Green will be on hand to sign books, which will be available for purchase at the event.
John Hemingway will also be present at the house Ernest and his wife Pauline moved into during the Christmas of 1931 to help raise a toast in honor of his family. John’s presentation on running with the bulls and “The Pamplona Posse” (as inspired by his grandfather’s novel “The Sun Also Rises”) will be presented the evening prior at the San Carlos Institute on Thursday, January 26 from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm. (Separate advanced ticket purchased required for this went as well).
“The Hemingway Experience” is sponsored in part by the Helmerich Trust and the Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, the Florida Council of the Arts and Culture and the State of Florida. Additional support provided by the Marriott Key West Beachside Resort, Papa’s Pilar Rum, Peychaud’s Aperitivo, and Dolin Vermouth.
