OFFICE OF THE STATE ATTORNEY

By DENNIS W. WARD, STATE ATTORNEY

PLANTATION KEY, APRIL 23, 2018 – Monroe County Circuit Court Judge Luis Garcia swore in an eight-person jury Monday to hear the case of Timothy Eugene Thomas III, charged with attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer and other counts stemming from a shooting incident in October 2015 on Stock Island.

Thomas, 28, is also charged with fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement and burglary of a dwelling armed with a firearm, both felonies; and petit theft, a misdemeanor.

Six of the jurors are primary jurors and two are alternates. They were chosen from a pool of 40 prospective jurors questioned by Assistant State Attorney Colleen Dunne, prosecuting the case with Assistant State Attorney Gail Conolly; and Assistant Public Defender Kevin McCarthy, defending Thomas with Assistant Public Defender Jason Smith.

According to police reports, on or about Oct. 24, 2015, Thomas used a semiautomatic firearm to shoot at or in the direction of Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Joshua Gordon on Stock Island, then sped away. A day later, he was arrested at a Key West house.

On Oct. 24, 2015, Deputy Gordon, on patrol, had pulled Thomas over in a traffic stop because the car Thomas was driving had stolen license plates attached.

Thomas’ trial opened Monday.
