NYC Sculptures to be installed in the Keys

The Monroe County Art in Public Places Committee along with the Florida Keys Council of the Arts are pleased to announce a new, extraordinary opportunity for Public Art installations throughout Monroe County. Local philanthropists, John Padget and Jacob Dekker have a vision, for eight (8) large scale sculptures created for Riverside Park in New York City, to have a permanent place in the Florida Keys. The sculptures were designed and fabricated by artists studying with world renowned bronze sculptor, Greg Wyatt at the legendary Art Students League in New York City.

Susann D’Antonio, Chair of the County’s public art committee and Elizabeth Young, who staffs the Committee traveled to NYC to view the artwork and meet with Mr. Wyatt and the League’s two directors, Timothy J. Clark and Ira Goldberg. The artists participate in a rigorous process to have their design be selected, and then fabricated. The large scale works, some nearly 20 feet tall are made from steel, iron and other materials, and are installed as a collaboration with the City’s Public Parks department and their engineers. Greg Wyatt, who curates the exhibit – now in its 6th year has become the signature program, sponsored by the Arts Student League (one of the most prestigious art schools in the world)

“Our trip was amazing, working with brilliant people and seeing the sculptures in place, Sue and I realized what an extraordinary gift this work is for our community.” said Elizabeth Young, Executive Director of the Florida Keys Council of the Arts “The opportunity to site work of this caliber throughout the Keys is a challenge but an amazing one,” commented Sue D’Antonio, “we will have ongoing guidance from Mr. Wyatt as we select the specific spots and work with the fortunate patrons who will install them on their property.” The committee will review proposals for the 8 artworks and are compiling packages for each one which will include images, engineering drawings, dimensions and installation costs. Mr. Padget and Mr. Dekker will fund the de-installation and transportation of the sculptures to Key West. “We are honored and thrilled to partner with the arts community to bring these outstanding works to the Keys – we know it will inspire and enhance the already dynamic and vibrant arts scene here.” John Padget said.
