New coming-of-age novel recalls South Florida in the stormy 1960s
Three author events set for South Florida in early January
PUTNEY, VT — Laced with humor and peopled with colorful characters, The Skinny Years, by award-winning author Raul Ramos y Sanchez, recalls South Florida during the 1960s, a decade rocked by the seismic shocks of the cold war, the civil rights movement and the hippie counter culture.
Called “gritty and witty” by Foreword Reviews, The Skinny Years is drawn from memories of the author’s youth in Miami and Key West. The novel follows the quirky travails of young Victor “Skinny” Delgado and his Cuban-exile family over their first ten years in the United States.
Cuban-born Raul Ramos y Sanchez grew up in South Florida’s cultural kaleidoscope before becoming a long-time resident of the U.S. Midwest. Along with The Skinny Years, Raul’s works of fiction include the critically-acclaimed Class H Trilogy (America Libre, House Divided and Pancho Land). The author and his work have been featured on television, radio and print publications across the country along with a host of online media sources
Over forty years after moving from South Florida to the Midwest, the author returns to the area for three events showcasing The Skinny Years. Joining Raul at the events will be former Key West City Commissioner Anthony “Fat” Yaniz whose family served as inspiration for some of the novel’s characters.
