National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day

Monroe County, Fla.— The Florida Department of Health in Monroe County celebrates National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day Friday, September 18, 2021, by reflecting on the many advancements that have been made so far that address the health and social needs of those who live with HIV/AIDS, and bringing attention to the growing number of people living long and full lives.

In 2018, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported persons aged 50 and older accounted for approximately 17 percent of new HIV diagnoses.  Forty seven percent of persons living with HIV are also age 50 and older.

The Monroe County Health Department’s HIV/AIDS Program and local community providers continue to assist PLWH (People Living with HIV) in our area to live their lives fully by providing great healthcare. The department, along with local providers, continue to advocate prevention tools, such as PrEP, for everyone even those over 50 years old.  For more information about HIV/AIDS in Monroe County, including prevention and treatment services, visit TestFLKeys.org.
