MYCEF brings Sailing back to the Middle Keys with the Mixer-In-the-Middle Regatta

Marathon Yacht Club Education Foundation/Middle Keys Sailing held the first regatta in decades for Marathon, Saturday, July 20th on the azure waters off 33rd Street, with a pool party for skippers and crew at The Marathon Yacht Club.

Ten knot winds greeted sailors on the flat, warm waters of the Gulf. Early threatening thunderstorms failed to materialize as the sailing went on uninterrupted throughout the afternoon on two overlapping modified Olympic courses.

Twenty boats in multiple classes under twenty feet vied for the coveted crown of Sir or Dame Mix-Master, complete with a side mounted ball cap. Sailors came from all corners of Monroe County to participate in this pre-season regatta to benefit youth sailing education. Young and adult alike sailed alongside each other in a series of 5 races. Racing was fast and furious, with different classes mixing it up on the water. Tricky currents, wind shifts, and a difficult racecourse challenged sailors’ skills to the end, with many races decided within a few seconds.

“Thank you to our generous sponsors, coaches, parents, volunteers and skippers for making this event such a huge success,” said Betsy Lefler, MYCEF Chair. “Congratulations to the winners, and let’s do this again.”
