Mucarsel-Powell & Tim Ryan Propose Investments in Social and Emotional Learning to Improve Educational Experience
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (FL-26), member of the Hispanic Caucus Education & Labor Task Force, and U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan (OH-13) introduced the Social and Emotional Learning for Families (SELF) Act (H.R. 4626). The bill authorizes a competitive grant program to increase the capacity of teachers and school leaders to work with families to develop and support the social and emotional skills, habits, and mindsets of children.
Studies have shown that schools implementing SEL practices see improvements in academic performance and classroom behavior. But additional research shows that these school-based programs are even more effective when they are supported by parent and family involvement.
