Motorist briefly flees from Deputy

A 41-year-old Key Largo man was arrested Thursday for fleeing from a Deputy who was attempting to stop him for speeding.

Joseph Lee Pitman was charged with fleeing and eluding, resisting arrest without violence and operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license.

Deputy Scott Costa was on High Point Road at approximately 11:45 p.m. when he observed a southbound Infiniti traveling 72 mph in a 45 mph zone on U.S. 1.

Deputy Costa pulled onto U.S. 1 with his lights and siren activated and observed the vehicle increase its speed before turning onto Monroe Drive.

The vehicle then turned onto Sebring Drive and stopped.

Pitman refused to exit the vehicle.

Sgt. Vaughn O’Keefe arrived on scene. Pitman continued to refuse to exit the vehicle.

Sgt. O’Keefe and Deputy Costa had to physically remove Pitman from the vehicle. He refused to be handcuffed outside the vehicle.

Pitman was taken to jail.
