Motorist arrested for trafficking amphetamines

A 42-year-old Key West man was arrested Thursday for possessing a large amount of amphetamines.

Kennith Elijah Sargent was charged with trafficking amphetamines and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Deputy Aaron Roddy was on patrol at approximately 5:10 p.m. Thursday on U.S. 1 near 55th Street in Marathon when he observed a Chevrolet sport-utility-vehicle with a cracked windshield from top to bottom and side to side, obstructing both the driver’s and passenger’s vision. The passenger was not wearing a seat belt. Side windows had been replaced with cardboard and other materials.

Deputy Roddy stopped the SUV. A female was driving and Sargent was identified as the passenger. A 3-year-old child was in the rear seat.

Both the driver and Sargent consented to a search of the vehicle. A baggie containing a white powder residue that field-tested positive for amphetamines was found in the passenger seat door.

A bag containing 28.4 grams of amphetamines was found on the ground near Sargent’s feet.

Sargent was taken to jail.

The female driver and child were released from the scene.
