Mote Marine Laboratory Collecting Halloween Candy Wrappers for Recycle Program
Mote Marine Laboratory is teaming up with Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s Unwrap the Waves candy wrapper recycling program that works with local organizations & schools to collect candy wrappers as a way to prompt discussions of conservation, sustainability and protection of our planet’s natural ecosystems. The purpose of the initiative is not just to ensure that families have a means to recycle their otherwise non-recyclable candy wrappers, but also to raise awareness of the large amount of single use holiday waste produced around the holiday season.
Unwrap the Waves is a candy wrapper recycling initiative spearheaded by Loggerhead Marinelife Center, a sea turtle rehabilitation and research center in Juno Beach, Florida. Mote is serving as the Florida Keys community partner with Loggerhead Marinelife Center to make recycling and sustainability efforts more accessible to everyone. We will send our wrappers back to LMC, where they will be sorted, counted, and recycled through Terracycle. Last year, Mote won the competition; we are hoping for the same results this year (with your help!)
We will be accepting donations at our facility on Summerland Key, Mote’s Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration (24244 Overseas Hwy). We will have a donation bin at the base of our facility, near the mailbox for drive-thru, candy wrapper drop-off anytime between now and November 10th.
Here are some interesting facts about Halloween candy wrappers:
- For the first time in 2019, candy and snack wrappers were #1 in items found during the International Coastal Cleanup Day.
- During the Halloween season, Americans produce an additional 25 tons of garbage.
- On average 300,000 tons of candy are sold during the Halloween season; this would be the equivalent of 6 Titanics!
