MONROE COUNTY VETERANS AFFAIRS WILL HONOR FALLEN SOLDIERS ON MEMORIAL DAY

Monroe County Veterans Affairs will co-host a Memorial Day ceremony with Key Largo VFW Post 10211 on Monday, May 27 at 11 a.m. at the Murray Nelson Government Center auditorium in Key Largo.

The ceremony is open to the public. The service will include the reading of letters of fallen soldiers by friends and family. The Key Largo Fire Department will present the colors, Keys Community Band will provide music, and Miss Alana Robles will sing the National Anthem.

“More than any other military holiday, this day is the most sacred of all military holidays as it honors those who gave all,” said Cathy Crane, Director of Monroe County Veterans Affairs. “Freedom is not free. Memorial Day recognizes the men and women who served our country bravely and paid the Ultimate Sacrifice to protect the rights of others.”

Memorial Day is traced back to the end of the Civil War and was known as Decoration Day, a day when graves of fallen soldiers were decorated in memory of their service. In 1971, Congress made Memorial Day a national holiday to be observed on the last Monday in May to pay tribute to those who died while serving in the military.

The Monroe County Veterans Affairs office will also be in attendance at the Memorial Day services in Key West. For more information on Monroe County Veterans Affairs, visit www.monroecounty-fl.gov/veteransaffairs, or call 305-453-8777.
