The FLDOE school grading system measures achievement, learning gains, and maintenance of the school’s focus on students who need the most support. The letter grade also comes with numerical indicators, or percentages, that allow the school to calculate how close they may have been from receiving another grade. For example, Gerald Adams Elementary was one percentage point away from receiving an ‘A’ grade, with the school’s strong English Language Arts results playing an important role in the indication of student success. As a result of the individual school grades, the district was only one percentage point away from a district grade of ‘A’ as well. FLDOE results show 11 districts statewide earned an ‘A’, while 37 earned a ‘B’. School administrators will assess and compare the grades to last year, based upon a breakdown of these measurements. Executive Director of Assessment and Accountability Dave Murphy said the grades are one of the crucial indicators of student and school success. “The improvement in English Language Arts (ELA) and learning gains in ELA district-wide validates the work done by teachers, principals, and district staff supporting improvement in that area. Overall district improvement is gratifying in that we continue the trend of overall student achievement improvement. The area of focus has been, and will continue to be, improving the district graduation rate and access to accelerated coursework/industry certification pathways for students in grades 6 through 12.”

Superintendent Mark T. Porter said the successes come with hard work. “As is always the case, there are opportunities for celebration and opportunities for improvement, but more than anything I want to thank and commend the outstanding employees of the Monroe County Schools for their efforts and continued improvement of outcomes for our students.  Gaining 27 additional points and finishing only 1% point from an ‘A’ rating is an outstanding accomplishment for the Monroe County Schools.”

The Monroe County School District serves approximately 8,600 students throughout the upper, middle, lower keys, and Key West.  The accredited school district consists of 10 public schools, six charter schools, as well as alternative and virtual programs. For more information about the district’s vision and mission, visit www.keysschools.com. Follow us on Facebook @MYMCSD, and follow the Superintendent on Twitter @supt_porter, for Monroe County School District updates.
