MONROE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT OFFICIAL SPEAKS AT GOVERNOR’S MANSION
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Exceptional Student Education Director Lesley Thompson presented during Ann Scott’s “First Lady Leadership Dinner” at the Governor’s Mansion. Dr. Thompson had the opportunity to network with women in leadership roles in Florida.
The dinner gave a platform to the women to be able to discuss their areas of expertise. Dr. Thompson presented topics related to diversity and disability. Dr. Thompson said, people attending the dinner were surprised at just how diverse the Keys are and how difficult access can be due to location. “I spoke about how difficult our roles are in small districts. I wanted to raise awareness in Tallahassee regarding the intensity and range of disabilities we have seen lately.”
Dr. Thompson added, even though the obstacles, like geographic location causes difficulty in access to resources, her team makes it work. ”Any challenge is an opportunity in disguise. We have helped our teachers grow and learn about unique disabilities. The schools have become such strong teams of problem solvers. When we work together we can accomplish anything!”
Monroe County School District Superintendent Mark Porter said opportunities like these showcase the leadership in the district. “Congratulations to Dr. Thompson for this well-deserved recognition in her representation of the Monroe County Schools.”
Dr. Thompson is head of Student Services, which houses academic programming for Exceptional Student Education, and the successful athletic program Unified Champions. She plans to return as a guest to the Governor’s Summit on Hispanic Affairs in Miami scheduled for October. The Monroe County School District serves approximately 8,600 students throughout the upper, middle, lower keys, and Key West. The accredited school district consists of 10 public schools, six charter schools, as well as alternative and virtual programs.
