MONROE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT FSA AND EOC RESULTS SHOW IMPROVEMENTS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS AND SOCIAL STUDIES
MONROE COUNTY, Fla. — Raw data from the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA), and end-of-course (EOC) exams show Monroe County students made improvements across all grade levels in English Language Arts (ELA), also in Civics and U.S. History on a district-wide basis. Students in the MCSD took the FSA in ELA and Mathematics. The EOC subjects include Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Biology 1, Civics, and U.S. History. Students also took a Statewide Science Assessment (SSA) in 5th grade and 8th grade. The results show students performing at a ‘satisfactory or above’, which means they have received a score of three or higher on these state assessments.
The district’s students made dramatic improvements in Algebra 1, jumping from 51% last year to 80% of students passing the EOC exam an improvement of 29% over previous year results. Students also made improvements on the SSA in 5th and 8th grade Science. Executive Director of Assessment and Accountability, David Murphy said the results show where the district has made improvements and which areas may need more attention for the coming year.
Mr. Murphy also said, the district will continue to look at the data and analyze even further after its release almost 24 hours ago. “It is a little early to predict what the district and school grades might be because of what is not included in the results (learning gains and acceleration measures) but it does give us an idea. What is difficult to interpret about this year’s results is the fact that there were some areas where we made great progress, and other areas where we were historically very strong and seem to have slipped a bit.”
Murphy said so far the raw data does show assessment results compared to last year from a district level, as follows:
- Improved in Grade 5 Science from 59% to 62% Satisfactory or Above.
- Improved in Grade 8 Science Satisfactory or Above 56% to 57% Satisfactory or Above.
- Improved in Civics from 71% to 78% Satisfactory or Above.
- Improved in Grades 3-5 Math from 61% to 65% Satisfactory or Above.
- Improved in Algebra from 51% to 80% Satisfactory or Above.
- Improved in Grades 3-10 English Language Arts from 56% to 59% Satisfactory or Above.
- Biology Satisfactory or Above from 69% to 62% Satisfactory or Above.
- Geometry Satisfactory or Above from 73% to 57% Satisfactory or Above.
- Algebra 2 Satisfactory or Above from 53% to 45% Satisfactory or Above.
- Grade 6-8 Math Satisfactory or Above 63% to 61% Satisfactory or Above.
Once the raw data has been reviewed and analyzed by the Department of Education, school grades and district rank will be determined later this summer. Mr. Murphy plans to give a report of the analysis at the School Board Meeting on June 13th.
