MONROE COUNTY REPAIRING HIGGS BEACH PIER FOR ADA COMPLIANCE AND PUBLIC SAFETY
KEY WEST, FL – Monroe County has begun a minor but important project to repair the wood side strips on the Higgs Beach pier. The wood strips are an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirement. They help prevent people in wheelchairs and other wheeled apparatus from rolling off the pier.
County employees in the Project Management and Facilities department are replacing and repainting the wood side strips, which have deteriorated due to the sun, waves and salt spray.
The project is expected to be completed in time for the 4th of July holiday. During these repairs, the County is trying to limit the time the pier is closed to the public.
