MONROE COUNTY RECEIVES GRANT FUNDING FOR COUNTYWIDE FLOOD RESILIENCY AND STORMWATER CODE UPDATES

MONROE COUNTY, FL – Monroe County recently received a $40,000 Resilient Coastline Program grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The grant was awarded for the purpose of updating and streamlining Monroe County’s land development code to comply with the “peril of flood” statute.

Monroe County also received an additional $40,000 Community Planning Technical Assistance grant from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. This funding will be used to update the County’s Stormwater Management Manual and Layman’s Brochure.

The grants allow Monroe County to update codes to reflect the best practices for floodplain management and resilience to protect environmentally sensitive areas. The update will also include sea level rise data that wasn’t available in 2016, when the County’s comprehensive plan was adopted.

This is a move forward in recognizing sea level rise impacts and incorporating the data we recently collected to form new or modify our current policy,” said Michael Roberts, Senior Administrator of Environmental Resources. “This allows the County to bring new data into our policy to address potential risks and see where we have gaps that need to be filled in.”

A state law requires consideration of future flood risk from storm surge and sea level rise in certain portions of local government comprehensive plans, including sea-level rise as one of the causes of flood risk that must be addressed in the redevelopment principles, strategies, and engineering solutions to reduce flood risk.
