MONROE COUNTY OFFICIALS ATTEND FLORIDA KEYS DAY IN TALLAHASSEE

Monroe County Commissioners, senior staff, officials from Florida Keys municipalities and local business owners were in the state capital Tuesday for the 10th annual Florida Keys Day. In addition to meeting with legislators, Monroe County Mayor Sylvia Murphy presented Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis with an Honorary Conch Certificate on the Old Capitol steps. The group also had a photo opportunity with Lieut. Gov. Jeanette Nunez and House Speaker Jose Oliva.

Along with Murphy, Commissioners Heather Carruthers, David Rice and Michelle Coldiron, County Administrator Roman Gastesi, County Attorney Bob Shillinger, Legislative Affairs Director Lisa Tennyson, and Finance Director Tina Boan discussed issues including the county’s proposed 50-50 Liability Bill, Stewardship Act funding, vessel pump-out funding, and other Monroe County matters of concern.

The jam-packed day also included Assistant County Administrator Kevin Wilson and Project Management’s Cary Knight touring the Leon County Emergency Operations. Assistant County Administrator Christine Hurley and her planning, environmental, housing, and hurricane recovery staff met with the Department of Environmental Protection, Volunteer Florida, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Florida Housing Finance Corporation, and the Department of Economic Opportunity.

The group was recognized on the floor by Rep. Holly Raschein and also met with the officials from Citizens Property Insurance, the Judiciary Committee, the Department of Business and Professional Regulations, Emergency Management, the Attorney General, the Commissioner of Agriculture, Visit Florida and more.

Florida Keys Day, hosted by Raschein and State Sen. Anitere Flores, is a product of the 2009 Leadership Monroe County Class XVII. The day ended with a sponsored reception with about 1,000 people enjoying popular Keys fare, like conch fritters, lionfish ceviche, and, of course, Key Lime pie.
