Monroe County Library Key West Branch Celebrates 60 Years at its Fleming Street Location

KEY WEST, FL – The Monroe County Library Key West branch will celebrate its 60th anniversary at its Fleming Street location on Wednesday, Nov. 13 and Thursday, Nov. 14. Both events take place at 6 p.m.

On Wednesday, the esteemed Monroe County Historian Tom Hambright will give the full history of the Key West library, which actually dates back to the 1890s. A question and answer session will follow his talk.

“Not only do we have many important documents relating to Ernest Hemingway’s life in Key West in our archives, but the Key West library has an even deeper connection to Hemingway that is not commonly known,” said Hambright.

Hambright will dig into the possibility that a love interest of Hemingway’s worked at the library in the 1960s. In addition, he will discuss Jimmy Buffett’s “office before he could afford one,” and more about Tennessee Williams connection to the library.

On Thursday, to continue the celebration, there will be a live jazz concert featuring the Libby York Quartet in the library’s Palm Garden. Local dignitaries and admirers of the public institution will also give brief remarks about the importance of the library.

Both events are free and open to the public, but seating is limited. For more information, contact the library at 305-292-3595 or visit www.keyslibraries.org.
