MONROE COUNTY HAS DECLARED A STATE OF LOCAL EMERGENCY AND HAS ISSUED MANDATORY EVACUATIONS FOR VISITORS AND RESIDENTS

MONROE COUNTY, FL – The Florida Keys SPCA Key West and Marathon campuses are in the process of evacuating all animals out of the Keys for Hurricane Irma.

Officials at those County animal shelters are directing residents to evacuate with their pets. No animals can be boarded at those facilities.

The Key West shelter is evacuating 89 cats, 1 chicken, 24 dogs, 23 rabbits, 8 land turtles and 1 parakeet

The Marathon campus is evacuating 43 cats, 8 dogs, 4 water turtles, 1 box turtle and 3 iguanas.

The animals are being evacuated to a network of foster homes. The animals will be kept safe until after the storm. If the foster caretakers need to evacuate, they commit to evacuating with the animal.

Unfortunately, because the storm is the length and width of the state, other shelters are not in a position to take any of our animals.

Before the hurricane season started, the Florida Keys SPECA updated its hurricane foster list. It includes people who are willing to foster and what species of animal works best for them. When the Florida Keys SPCA mobilizes, they call the list and match the different species to the marked foster homes on the list.

“We are grateful for our island community and everyone who has stepped up to keep our homeless pets safe through this storm,” said Tammy Fox, Director of the Florida Keys SPCA.
