Monroe County Fire Rescue Partners With Keys to Be the Change to Read With Lower Keys Students

LOWER KEYS, FL – Monroe County Fire Rescue partnered with Keys to Be the Change to read with students at Sugarloaf School and Big Pine Academy. Firefighters from Stations 10 and 11 read with selected students once a week for the Mentors Optimizing Reading Excellence (MORE) program.

“Our firefighters are well respected in the community and many children look up to firefighters as role models and mentors,” said Deputy Chief Steve Hudson, of Monroe County Fire Rescue. “This one-on-one reading experience is wonderful for both our firefighters and the children involved with the program.”

Keys to Be the Change is a local nonprofit organization with a mission is to provide programs, education, awareness, and opportunities that empower children, youth, and adults to improve health, wellness, and skills for success in school and in life.

“It has been my pleasure to connect the young readers with the Monroe County Fire Department’s firefighters,” said Amy Harper, Assistant Director of Keys to be the Change. “The students love interacting with the firefighters.”
