Monroe County Career Criminal Sentenced to 30 Years for Sale of Cocaine Near Place of Worship
October 31, 2024 – Key West, FL – The Monroe County State Attorney’s Office today announced the conviction and sentencing of Brian Keith Barroso, a career criminal, on two counts of cocaine sale following a successful jury trial. Barroso, with an extensive documented history of violent and drug-related offenses, was sentenced to 30 years in prison by Judge Mark Wilson. Judge Wilson underscored the severity of Barroso’s record, which includes multiple convictions for grand theft, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, DUI, and fraudulent use of credit cards, as grounds for the enhanced sentence. As a habitual felony offender, Barroso’s penalties were increased to reflect the persistent danger he posed to the community.
The investigation leading to Barroso’s conviction stemmed from a covert operation conducted on May 3, 2022, by the Key West Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit. Under the coordination of Detective Henry J. del Valle, detectives arranged a buy-walk operation utilizing a confidential informant (CI), who successfully completed a monitored purchase from Barroso and his accomplice. The transaction, involving cocaine sales, occurred within 1,000 feet of Williams Hall Church, a designated place of worship and community center in Key West. Surveillance and detective accounts confirmed Barroso’s direct role in the illicit exchange.
“Barroso’s arrest and conviction are a testament to the collaborative efforts of law enforcement and prosecutors to protect our communities from habitual offenders,” stated Major Crimes Prosecutor Assistant State Attorney Colleen Dunne, who prosecuted the case. “This conviction is a crucial step in maintaining the safety and peace of Key West, and it reflects our unwavering commitment to holding repeat offenders accountable.”
Chief Assistant State Attorney Joseph Mansfield emphasized the thorough preparation required in cases involving career offenders, stating, “Bringing charges against individuals with extensive criminal backgrounds requires careful coordination and vigilance. The successful outcome of this case sends a clear message that those who continually disregard the law will face significant consequences.”
State Attorney Dennis Ward expressed gratitude for the team’s work, saying, “I extend my thanks to Major Crimes Prosecutor Dunne and the Key West Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit for their efforts in securing a safer future for our community. Removing career criminals like Barroso from our streets is critical to ensuring Key West remains a secure and welcoming place for all.”
Barroso’s case underscores the State Attorney’s Office’s commitment to tackling drug trafficking and habitual offending. By targeting high-risk offenders and enhancing penalties for repeat convictions, the office aims to foster a safer, drug-free environment for residents and visitors alike.
