MONROE COUNTY APPOINTS SHANNON WEINER AS NEW DIRECTOR OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

KEY WEST, FL – The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners promoted Deputy Director Shannon Weiner to Director of Monroe County Emergency Management at the Wednesday meeting. Current Director Marty Senterfitt will have a 3-month transition period with Weiner, from which he may move into a consultant role for the County. She has been with Monroe County Emergency Management since March 2016.

“I look forward to continuing to grow the partnerships Emergency Management has in the community as we carry out our mission to build safety, strength, and disaster resiliency for Monroe County,” said Weiner.

Most recently, Weiner was Deputy Incident Commander for the Monroe County response and recovery of Hurricane Irma in 2017 and the 2016 screw worm outbreak. She also was the assigned as Planning Chief for Charlotte County during Hurricane Charley in 2004 while Emergency Management Coordinator for Sarasota County. When she moved the Florida Keys in 2011, she was an intelligence analysist for Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Weiner has a Master of Business Administration from the University of Tampa and is a Florida Professional Emergency Manager. She also sits on the Florida Emergency Preparedness Association (FEPA) Certification Commission, Mass Care Working Group, and is the association’s Alternate Area Governor for Southeast Florida Region 7.

Weiner currently does the planning, training and exercise activities for the department and serves on the Coast Guard Florida Keys Area Committee and the Department of Homeland Security Task Force-South East. In addition, she has served as representative to the Florida State Working Group on Domestic Preparedness and co-chaired the first Florida Region 6 Tactical Interoperable Communications Plan.

“I have complete confidence in passing the torch to Shannon after working with her the past four years. She is talented, professional, and well-respected among our peers,” Senterfitt said. He added that he has immense love for the Florida Keys and after the transition would be dedicated to the community as a consultant in the face of any future disaster.
